THE MAORI RACE.
I endorse what Dr. Sutherland, of the Canterbury University College, says. Education is the only key to the burning question of the future of the Maori. If you give the Maori education, that is all there js. Farm schemes should be linked with agriculture training schools; provision should also exist for technical and professional training. When the Maori has that —well, that is all there is in it. An eminent man from overseas has remarked on the harmony between the two races lining side by side; but from my point of view there is no danger or harm in it. In Australia, what are they doing with the Australian black-?—nothing; in Africa, nothing; in America, nothing; Egypty nothing; India, nothing;. ■ I speak from experience. I have been in Australia, Africa, America, Egypt and India, and' most of all the Cook Group. When I say nothing, in most of all these countries I have mentioned the coloured race has no say in framing the law of the land. In New Zealand and' the Cook Islands the natives have, their say or have their representatives in framing the- law of' the land.. We have men in New. Zealand ■who study Maori life.. Such men. are Mr. G. Graham, Mr. Fisher, Mr. P. Smvth, Mr. J. Cowan, Mr. H. Stowell, Mr. T. Lindsay Buick, Dr. P. Buck (I'e Rangihiroa), Sir A. T. Ngata and a good many more. They are the highest authorities on Maori life. You have to see through both pakeha and Maori eyes, otherwise you cannot analyse this Maori question. There is only one scheme in New Zealand that benefits the Maori as a whole, •and that is'Sir'A. T. Ngata's Maori land scheme. J want to see the Government gd iito this \Maori, question and put action into it. B. W. MATTHEWS.
