ATHLETICS.

WITH THE LADIES. IDA CAMPBELL IMPRESSIVE. NO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

As far as the ladies were concerned, the Auckland Centre's teams' meeting at Car law Park, on Saturday last, was an unqualified success, the result of the competition being in doubt right up to'the

last event. Although Otahuhu only had one first, against Hamilton's three and Kiwi's two, consistent performance which gained for them a good number of second and third places enabled them to win the teams championship by one point from Hamilton, with Kiwi two points behind. An unexpected but popular win was that of Papatoetoe in the shot.

Hamilton's successes in both the relays was indisputably due to the fleet-footedness of Ida Campbell. A dropped baton in the 440 relay robbed this event of much of its interest. Mrs. B. Thomas showed a determined burst of speed in this race in a vain endeavour to make up the lost ground.

Of a verv even lot of competitors in the hurdles, Leslie Godfrey (O.) and Barbara Paterson (K.) were the best, the latter girl putting in a great run to be beaten by inches only. Kiwi secured a fairly easy win in the high jump, but performances in both broad jump and discus were not up to (standard.

Although only introduced this season the shot is now the most popular; of the field events, and has been included in the Indies' events at the provincial championships at Hamilton. Miss Fielden (P.), with a put of nearly 24ft, is the best to The New Zealand Council at Wellington haa advised the Auckland Centre that there will be no national championships for women this year. As Otago Centre was the only centre that definitely opposed the proposal this decision must have been arrived at by the council, who have thus once again clearly indicated that, while they are quite willing to levy charges on the' girls and accept affiliation and registration fees from them, they are opposed to any proposal which would encourage the ladies and centres desirous of helping them. A further effort will be made by the Auckland Centre at the Conference of Ceitres. which is to be held in Auckland on March 12, to secure some encouragement and support for the girls. Events for ladies at the Japanese meeting at Car-law Park on February 20: —100 yards, 80 yards hurdles, shot, broad jump, 220 yards relay (4 x 55). The fourth scratch race meeting will be held at Grey Lynn Park on Saturday next, when the events will be:—7s yards, discus, shot, high and broad jump, and relay (4 x 1001. the first event being timed for 2 p.m.
