Hawaii a State?
Hawaii will ask the United States Congress at tlie opening of the new session for admission to the Union as the 40th State, sa.vs the Washington correspondent of the United Press. At Its request a joint commission of Congress will visit the islands to conduct hearings and to make investigations preliminary to granting the rank of a State— Cable If Hawaii, which, like Alaska, is at present known as a "Territory," is admitted to full membership of the United States of America it will make an alternation in the republic's flag necessary. The "Stars and Stripes" at present consists of 48 stars representing the 48 States comprising tlie nation. The 13 red and white stripes stand for the 13 original colonies. Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia. Maryland, Massachusetts, Xew Hampshire. New Jersey. Xew York. XortV Carolina. Pennsylvania. Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia, which revolted against English rule in 1778 and established the United States of America as an independent republic. The addition of Hawaii to the Union would mean that a 49th star would have to be added and would become the first State outside the territorial
