FIGHTING WEEDS.
Since the recent showers weeds are springing up apace, and will necessitate frequent hoeing to keep them under control. At this season they not only grow rapidly, but mature and scatter their seeds in an incredibly short space of _ time if neglected. With many varieties of weeds, too, hoeing is not sufficient; for if left on the ground, even after being eut, they remain alive and develop and scatter their seeds. The most effective method is to gather them up and burn or mix with manure or other vegetable matter to set up enough fermentation to destroy any vitality in the seeds. Such material turned into compost is always useful, especially where stable manure is not obtainable. It is surprising the amount of refuse that is allowed to waste that, if allowed to decay, would lighten the soil and provide food for crops.
