BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP. .. . . . \ i SECTIONAL CONTESTS. ' SOME PLAY FIVE ROUNDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ~ ;s■■■.; WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The New Zealand bowling tournament was continued to-day in fane weather, marred by a strong wind. Four rounds were played in the pairs competition, aud some sections completed a full five rounds. The fifth round will be completed tomorrow morning. Post-section play will then proceed on'the' "sudden-death" principle. '■:,■ Outright winners of sections, and those who tie with winners of sections, go on to 'post-section V play in pairs. I Thus players who, at the conclusion of play in the fourth round to-night, - had a lead of more than one win in the section were in'an unassailable position, unless another pair were level them. Pairs in this position were, those skipped by Gee and Nay lor. '"",.'.'

Dickinson, Hill, Jack, Higginbotham, Jlartella, Russell, Mitchell and Xtodger are of sections which have completed five rounds. -, ■

■In section Q 1, pairs skipped by Avey and Ives have played five games. Although the remainder of their section has not completed its fifth round, they have four wins each, and are certain to tie as winners.' '■"'; •' ' "

Several ex-pairs champions are among those who are in hopeless ,positions, dr. appear in danger of not qualifying for post-seetion play. Bniekenridgc had only one win, and M. Walker had two wins in the section, led by Kolls and Wells with four wins. ~ .'-.-' J

; One pair. Scrimshaw and Edwards (Teniuka), had'two wins in section D 1, but there are two pairs m the lead withthrec wins each. Tamblyn is out of section G, having only itwo "wins, while Koine "leads tliis section with four...- '

On the other hand. Squire leads section H 1, level with Martin.

Hnwbrtlr- is level with several others at the "head of section . If, and . Bromner (West End, Auckland) has got through section play by tying with .Hazlcwbod in winning section R.l. _. •'

. Rain of the previous, afternoon and night made the greens slow for the first ganics .to-day, but bright sunshine and a warm breeze quickly improved them. The wind freshened during the :day to such a degree that it affected the run of bowls on. exposed greens, , but towards evening it abated, and-, conditions became almost ideal for.. the last' heads of the fourth round. •'*•''- . HARDLEY AND BRBAINER DO BEST. (By TRUNDL.BK.)'-;, . It was fortunate, that the : weather recovered for the section rounds in ..the pairs, for, this, leaves the course clear for President's Day at the parent, club of the city, Thursday afternoon having been fixed for the opportunity -{of the . Hon.■ W. .Perry, JI.L.C, to receive arid entertain all the competitors and their wives at the Wellington paviTion and 'greens. :- t Such good progress was made b'y recasting the tiinc-table to permit of four rounds beingplayed, instead of only three as originally planned—even the wholei five being played lii several sections—that there seems to be no reason to prevent any competitor from attending. ~ '■..;.''■:.>"■ :. ■ :■'■.; ; '.■.;-,. fr :

Furthermore,''there is now a possibility, that' considerable progress will be made in !the singles- during tlie morning, with, a' bare chance that a record may be made by reaching the "final in the afternoon, a spectacle that has never yet graced President's Day.

An illustration, will show how this progress may be made. H. Field (Karori), still in tne singles,- is not in the pahs at all; and .lie is .drawn'to play A. Dempster, of the sume club, who is paired with J. iloHitt and requires to meet .A. E. Stone (St. John's,' formerly-of Mount. Eden), i'lie latter had a theoretic chance to tie. in the. section, were it not for; the'i fact that the only two in the section with three wins, uanielj- Wilkinson '(Cromwell) and h. J. Keys (Auckland), with A. W. Israel as lead, have to meet in the remaining'round. .There is no object whaUver, therefore, in Dempster going to Seiitoun to meet Stone, as neither can possibly tie', so there.is nothing to prevent Dempster meeting Field at.once. :.' •,. r

That-is the general-principle on which the. singles wilt be able to" make progress during the day, the expression being that the competition continues " as players arc available"- .Consequently there will Ibe every likelihood'that in the afternoon some will-be playing- to find the'green'winner in the pahs, others the first round of postsection play, others the second round, and others the third, fourth and fifth rounds in the singles, all at the game time.

The first day was disastrous to Auckland competitors in the pairs, only two pairs, J. H. Mingins (J-Jpaom) and K. S. Higginbotham (Henderson)—although playing for Poiisbnby on this occasion—being returned as,absolute section winners; so their next duty is to wait until' Maftella (Blenheim) and. Rodger (Khandallah). meet to, settle the. tie.'in' the other section on", the. same' green, '. and then ; they will tackle, the winning pair,, to, find the green .winner. After this tlie'y ■ proceed tin the ;sudden death principle to meet the other winners, and it .iyill -take five rounds to find the champion pair, so it will be impossible to' finish" until play, is resumed after the surviving pairs: are released 'from the rinks.'- The other pair in this forward position are:.\V. Boyce and L. Russell (St. Helier's). '■_ ■[■■■

"The earliest that the final can be played will be next Wednesday morning, and it niay be Thursday, or even Friday, if one pair happens logoa long way in the rinks also, like J. W, Turpin and R. Haworth did last : year in Ohristchurch, thereby 1 holding up their meeting with JVHigginsori and H, Whittle (Grey Lynn;. ■

r. However, seveeral Auckland pairs are entering tile eeeond day With fairly.good prospects of a win or a tie in their section, and even a tie leaves them a prospect of winning the championship. ...'

Jiniong these the most hopeful are C. E. Hardley and W. Bremner (West End)j for they have played all the five: rounds,' and only have to meet J. B. Reid and Hazlcwood (Lyall Bay) in the section tie, Jack. Eeid's latest .exploit was in win* ning the Lyall Bay tournament on New Year's. Day, but he "will probaljly be best remembered in Auckland because in' the last Dominion tournament,. held;', in Wellington; four years ago, he reached : the semi-finals in .the singles, when he was defeated by T. T. McAliiter. (Helensville),' who played in tile Onehunga. colours that year. ■.'..'■ '■■ ' ■ !'••■ ' ■■'■ " '■■■■'"> :■■-'■ '■■.-.

J.'L.'Wakerley,nDf',.W. 'A' Hill (Kooky Nook) are in the next best position, for they tie in a section with two others, so they may have to win two games to go forr ward, according to v/ho gets the bye. It is bad luck that if they win, and Bremner wins also, the two Auckland pairs have to, meet at once, and only one can go forward?

■ Others with quite a good.chance are W. J. Cahill and A. Avery (St.Helier's), but their team mates in the. rinl>6, W., Boyce and L. Russell, have already won their section outright, and merely meet G. M. Davis and A. - H:.-V Mitchell (Whitiora, Hamilton)-for the/green winner.
