THIRD TEST.
"PILING ON AGONY" COMMENT IN ENGLAND I "DON PAYS OFF OLD SCORES." WONDER AND CONSTERNATION (Recrivrd 12 noon.) LOXDOX, January 5. The evening papers hail Bradman's score with mixed wonder and consternation. This was best expressed by the "Star's" poster: /'Still Piling on the Agony." H. A. Carson, in the "Evening Xews," says:— "Five hundred has never been seen in the fourth innings of n Test, bnt as the Australians arc two games down Bradman was compelled to but to the bitter end. "Bradman and Finglvton played the bowling with appalling confidence. Of course, v:e were bound to have a Bradman century. The batsmen frequently turned ones into two, twos into threes. Had England been batting half of these runs would not have been attempted." The highest fourth innings on record is 411 by England, at Sydney, in 1924-25, when set to make 605 to win. ' Don Pays Off Old Scores," was another snappy evening poster. All feature his double century and Australian records. WEATHER AND WICKET. FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS. (Received 2.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this da v. The weather is fine, though cloudy for the fifth day's play in the third cricket Test between England and Australia. The wicket is in excellent order.
