PLANS FOR NEW YEAR. ( SCHEME FOR CITY FLATS. i DWEIXXNGB AKO SCHOOLS. ( A proposal for the erection of a biff block of flats in the city is the principal feature at present of the pew building year in Auckland. Last year there was steady activity in the trade, and, in particular, many fine dwellings were erected. In many parts of the city area, which spreads from Avondale to the Taniaki and Epsom, new homes are being erected to-day, and it is expected that there would he a continuation of home building this year.No definite advice was obtainable today as to the new block of flats, though it is understood that it is to be erected on a site in Symonds Street. Last year work was commenced on a well-known property in Symonds Street, "Cintra," the former home af the late Sir Arthur Myers. The three blocks there, which are expected to be completed in March, will comprise 75 flats. Last year the Auckland City Council issued permits for about 400 dwellings, •averaging over 30 a month. Contractors are now settling down again after the holiday period. Eleven new buildings have been commenced and a few permits have been taken out this week. The Auckland Education Board k continuing an active building policy to cape with the growing needs of the district. A splendid modern structure at Richmond Road has been completed and is ready for occupation. The old buildings will be removed and the area will eventually be available for playing grounds. At the Kohimaraina School noi additional classroom is being constructed. and this will be the nucleus of an infants' school. Three extra classrooms are added to the Dominion Road School, which was previously an adjunct to Mount Roskill. but which will now become an individual school. The Department has also called tenders for a new school at Howick to consolidate smaller schools in that area. It will comprise seven classrooms and a science laboratory.
