RETIREMENTS.

THE PUBLIC SERVICE. AFTER FORTY YEARS' WORK. STATEMENT BT MB. SAVAGE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ij this day. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, stated to-day that retirement from the Public Service after 40 years' work, as recently announced in connection -with the post office, is' the general decision of the Government eoverfng all Departments. • "There must be exceptions where it is difficult immediately to fill responsible ' administrative positions," he 'added. "We have to use common sense under such conditions, but in general our retirement policy is being carried out." Inquiries show that the Government's decision causes the greatest number of retirements in the post office, as other sections of the Public Service have been steadily retiring officers after 40 years or on reaching the age of 60. It is not, therefore anticipated that a large number will be affected by the enforcement •f the retirement regulation.
