ELLERSLIE MEETING.

THE FINAL DAY.

FRANCIS DRAKE WINS STAKES GREEK GOLD THE BOWEN HANDICAP. Weather conditions wen; ideal for the concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting at Ellerslie 011 Saturday, and there was a large attenddancc. The track, after the recent rain, was holding, but nevertheless there was some good racing. During the day the sum of £00,043 was put through the machine, compared with £42,329, an increase of £18,(114. This made a total for the meeting of £26(5.134, against £208,8.~>4 for the previous summer fixture, an increase of £57,280. Tho Grandstand Handicap, the chief event of the day, was won bv King Rey, who also won the Summer Cup on the second day. Cuddle followed up her Auckland Cup and King's Plate victories by annexing the Clifford Plate, making throe wins in as many starts at the meeting. Francis Drake made amends for his defeat in the Great ..Northern Foal Stakes by Koyal Chief by winning the Royal Stakes by hall a length from that colt. The Jumpers. Lap Up was withdrawn from the Auckland Hurdles, and Modern Maid (£1170), Roxy (£860) and Erination (£823) were in most demand. Modern Maid and Erination were first out, and passing the stands Modern Maid and Roxy were together piloting the field from Kanapa, Erination and Valpai, all . on terms, then following Irish Comet and Mio Lume. Along the back Modern Maid and Roxy were just showing out from Valpai, Erination, 'Irish Comet, Kanapa, Merry Lap and Mio Lume, with Gay Cavalier a good way back. Modern Maid was first to turn for home from Irish Comet, Roxy, Erination and Valpai. Erination came 10 grief' at the final obstacle, and in » fine finish Roxy just got up to beat Modern Maid by a head, with Irish Comet two lengths away, third. Valpai was next, and then came Kanapa, Mio Lume and Merry Lap, with Gay Cavalier a long way back. The Royal Stakes. Six horses fulfilled {heir engagement in the Royal Stakes, and backers went solidly for Royal Chief (£2490) and Francis Drake ( £2035). Francis Drake, Royal Chief and Bachelor King, who drew the inside positions at the start, were quickest out. and racing across the top Francis Drake was in charge from Bachelor King, Golden Blonde, Royal Chief, Privy Seal Except that the flrat-named three horses were practically in a line there was no change into the straight. Francis Drake hung out badly in the run to the post, but finished solidly under the judge's box to beat Royal Chief by half a length, with Golden Blonde tnree-quarters of a length further back. Bachelor King, Elanage and Privy Seal finished as named. Sectional times: One furlong 14s, .two 20 1-bs, three 38 .2-ss, six furlongs 1.15 2-5. Only Three Starters. The Clifford Plate attracted a field of three, and Cuddle was installed a very hot favourite. They moyed away to an e.ven start, and passing the 'stands. Oratory was about a length in front of Cuddle and Argentic. Along the back Oratory was still bowling along a length in front of Cuddle, while Argentic Was a similar distance away. There was no change as they raced across the top except that Argentic was about two lengths behind Cuddle. 1 Half way down the straight Cuddle ran through to the front, while Argentic challenged and ranged up (tlongsfde Oratory. Cuddle was doing her work nicely over the last bit to win by half a length, while Argentic and Oratory had a rare tussle for second money, the judge declaring for the former by. a head. Sectional times:—Two furlongs, 28s; three, 40s > four, 525; five, 1.5; six, 1.17 2-5; seven, 1.30; dne"~niile and a quarter, 2.7 3-5. The Open Sprint. Tybalt and Oratory Yhiled to'start in the Bowen Handicap, and most support was accorded Trench Fight" ( £1773) and Sweet Rose ( £1258). However, the win,'ner turned up in " Greek Gold, who had finished second in the opening event. Several horses were very fractious at the start, and when they were let go Impasto jumped out in front from Star Artist, Royal Dance, Solaria and Greek Gold. Royal Dance then raced through to lead across the top, just ahead of Impasto and Solaria, with Star Artist, Greek Gold, Trench Fight and Sweet Rose next. The order' into the straight was Royal Dance, Solaria, Impasto, Greek Gold, Sweet Rose, Johnny Walls and Star Artist. Greek Gold then came . through, anl did best to win by half a length from Impasto, with Solaria a head away, and Sweet Rose fourth. Then came De Friend, Trench Fight, Johnny Walls, Mangukaha Ifltt Star Artist. Later | | AUCKLAND HURDLES of €350. * Two miles.
