LAUNCH SINKS.
HARBOUR BOARD'S VESSEL SALVAGE EFFORTS FAIL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. Washed from her moorings at the old wharf at about midnight on New Year's Eve, the Whakatane Harbour Board's launch Nick was carried by a strong current against a rock in midstream. The crew made an effort to get her clear of the rock. The attempt proved partially successful, and the anchor was lowered. However, the launch commenced to make water, evidently through a hole made in the hull through contact with the rock. Finally the boat settled down at the bow and riank. Another attempt at salvage of the Nick was made on Friday afternoon by Messrs. Wright's trawler Outlaw, but without result. The river being at that time in high flood the crew was unable to attach ropets to the sunken vessel, the only part of which above water was the top of the mast.
