CHESS TOURNEY.

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP. OFFICIAL OPENING DAY. ANNOUNCEMENT OF DRAW. Players from all over New Zealand were present this morning- at the opening of the forty-sixth annual congress of the New Zealand. Chess Association. The president, Dr. T. G. Short, welcomed visitors and players. "We recognise that chess is one of the most democratic of games," he said. Among players were men of all walks of life, and over the chess board they all found their true level. "Chess is indeed a great leveller of human pride and conceit," he added. The president referred to the "presence of Mr. F. Iv. Kelling, of Wellington, oiie .of the veterans of the game in New Zealand, who had been playing for Jonger than most of them could remember. Mr. A. Rosser, who opened the congress officially on behalf of the Mayor and the Auckland Cjty Council, did not profess to a knowledge of the game. He spoke in allegorical terms of the game, comparing it to the game called life. In both chess and life there were kings and queens, bishops, knights and pawns, who had their own respective and appropriate functions, and without which neither game, would be complete or possible. "There are also things called rooks." he said, amidst laughter. "We must beware of them." Mr. Kelling briefly replied on behalf of the visitors. The president announced after a meeting of players that play would begin at G. 45 in the evenings and at 1.30 p.m. in the afternoons. There will be games this evening and every afternoon this week, and on Monday and Thursday of next week. The tourney will be continued for several days in the following week after the New Year.
