BRABIN CUP.

Junior Representatives' Contest At Devonport.

The annual match for the Brabin Cup between the Auckland and Wellington representatives under 21 years of ago, ■who have not played more than two games this season in senior club cricket, commenced at the Devonport Domain this morning and will continue all day on Monday.

Flyger beat Croft for the toss and elected to take firGt strike on an easy wicket, which had quickly recovered from recent rains. The sun came out just as play began, but there was no appreciable breeze to assist the bowlers, and, while the outfield was lawn-like, it needed a hefty hit to find the lino. Higgins and Waters opened for Auckland to the bowling of Bentley and Bush, the former taking a long run and aiming at speed, while Bush struck a length at once with medium-paced deliveries. Higgins was the first to get going, the left-hander taking two fours

and a pair of twos off Bentley in successive balls. Waters reached double figures with a nice four off Bentley, but the next ball swung in and beat the bat. 32 —I—ll.1—11. Flyger joined Higgins, and Bentley gave way to Boddy with 45 on for as many minutes' batting, Bentley showing one for 14, and Bush, with none for 2G, handed over to McKeown, with a googly type of delivery, Higgins bringing 50 up with a pull shot to the leg boundary from his first delivery. Flyger opened carefully and reached double figures with a warm chance to Gwilliam at second slip off Boddy, but opened out to McKeown with eight off the following over. Boddy was treated with respect, with only four runs from as many overs. The fielding of the Wellington colts was keen and clean, with accurate returns to the wicket, but foot-faulting by the bowlers brought the "no ball" call frequently as they dragged over the line. Ftyger continued to score freely until Bentley, the Wellington express, came on again, and the Auckland captain was caught by Dalton at the wicket in his first over. 80—2—28. A. Smith followed and the century came up in 95 minutes, Dyer relieving McKeown at the harbour end. At 112 Higgins fell in cutting Bush, a snap catch by Dyer at first slip dismissing him after a sound opener's knock of 50 in two hours, without a chance, and including five fours and six twos. The Shore junior Harry Walters followed and was quickly off the mark with two singles and a nice four from Bush. Witli 120 on Allen was tried from the Vauxball end, making the sixth bowler used by Wellington. Boddy came on again and Walters lashed at an off one, but a spinner in the gully was dropped, and Smith got in front to Bush in tlie next over, the Mount Albert colt batting nicely for 21, without a four. 141—4— 21. Donaldson was next and at lunch the score was 150 to Auckland for the loss of four wickets. After lunch, on a drying wicket, Abel went cheaply, four wickets falling for 39. At 2.30 p.m. Abel had lost eight wickets for 201. Scores:— AUCKLAND.—First Innings; Higgins, c Dyer, b Busli 50 Waters, b Bentley 11 Flyger, c Dalton, b Bontley 2S •A. Smith, lbw, b Bush 21 11.
