LEAGUE OF NATIONS.

ANSWER TO CRITICS.

TRAVEL CLUB ADDRESS.

The final luncheon of the Auckland Travel Club for the year was held at Milne and Choyce's reception hall today, when Mr. J. A. C. Allum presided. The speaker was Mr. H. E. Hyde, a London journalist, who has been associated with the League of Nations.

Mr. Hyde dealt interestingly with the work of the League and answered its many critics by pointing t» the disputes the League had been successful in deciding. He also mentioned disputes which, but for the counsel of the League, would probably have led to war. He emphasised the threatening position the world was in to-day and expressed the opinion that the only-way to world peace was by a general disarmament policy to bring countries down to the level of other countries. This was the only way of preventing a European war. The disarmament should be universal and reduced to a reasonable level, he said.

After Mr. Hyde had been accorded a hearty vote of thanks the chairman, on behalf of the club, made presentations to Mrs. G. T. Simpson and Mrs. Victor Macky.

There was a,round of applause when Mr. Allum also presented to Mrs. Maungatai Babbington many parcels of toys foe distribution among the poor children of the Maoris at Orakei and also of returned Maori soldiers.

A presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Allum was made" by Mrs. Macky.
