AVONDALE COURSE.
SHIFTING THE STANDS. Some time ago the Avondale Jockey Club decided to move the grandstand and the stewards' stand closer to the track, and a start was made at the beginning of last month. New foundations for the grandstand have been put in, and during the last few days the building has been cut in half. The portion nearest the stewards' stand was moved on to its new foundations yesterday, and the other half will be in position by the end of the week. Later the stewards', stand will be moved forward a similar distance, but it will be placed at an angle to enable those oil it to get a full view of the course. Several structural alterations have been- made to this building, and the whole of the work will be completed in time for the club's autumn meeting next April. STABLE AND TRACK NOTES. TO CONTEST OPEN EVENTS. Ivilonsai has raced well this season and she shows no ill-effects from her two hard races at the Takapuna meeting at Ellerslie last month. Yesterday morning she worked alone over six furlongs and got through her task in good style. At the forthcoming summer meeting at Ellerslie Kilonsa will be seen out in open events, her engagements including the Summer Cup, the Christmas Handicap, GoodSvood Handicap amt Railway Handicap; DOING GOOD WORK. During the last week Master Briefly has registered two good gallops at Ellerslie, and his effort over a mile on the No. 1 grass at Ellerslie yesterday morning indicates that he will strip a very fit horse for his engagement in the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday. As Master Briefly is inclined to drift at the beginning of his races, the course at Te Awamutu may not be quite to his liking, but if he is well placed at the turn for home he should be very troublesome, for he is a resolute finisher. , WAIPA PLATE CANDIDATE. Girl Pat has been galloping well at Te Awamutu, and she will have to be reckoned with if started in the Waipa Plate at Te Awamutu on Saturday. This two-year-old has only had three races and was third to Aiwai and Penzance in the Avondale Stakes, and occupied a similars-posi-tion to Francis Drake and Elanage in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie in October, which was her last start. She has also been left in the Royal Stakes and is in the Nursery Handicap. Criterion Handicap and Midsummer Handicap at the Auckland summer meeting.GOOD NOVICE TEAM. The Ellerslie trainer R. S. Bagby has four promising novices in his stable in Jack Tar, King Neptune. Glen Abb and Tidewaiter. They are all three-year-olds, and Glen Abb is the only one that has not raced. He is an Australian-bred gelding by Silvius from La Chantreuse, by Crowdennis from Vocal Princess, the dam of Ornamental. He is owned by Mr. A. LonJ® who purchased the gelding at the Sydney Easter sales last year. He is a good-looking J sort, and, although he has not done much | fast work, he shows a. fair amount of pro- j mise. Jack Tar and King Neptune made their appearance at the recent Takapuna meeting, the former running second to Fox Moth in the Melrose Maiden and the latter occupying a similar position to Valamito in the Vauxhall Handicap. Jack Tar is by Captain Bunsby from Santaline, and is a half-brother to Martorni, while King Neptune is' a half-brother by Tidal to King ; March, Gay Marigold and Limarch. i
