40-HOUR WEEK.

BUS OVERLOADING. "REMEDY WITH PUBLIC." EXPLANATION BY COUNSEL. As an explanation for the fact that one of the fleet of the North Shore Transport Company was overloaded on November" 24, Mr. Lisle Alderton told Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning that the loading on the buses on the Shore had altered completely with tne coming into operation of the 40-hour week and change in weekly working hours. The period at present, counsel said, was one of transition and the company was trying to work out a new schedule for times when peak loading was likely to occur. His company, he eaid, admitted the facts of the case. Mr. T. C. Clissola, who prosecuted on behalf, of the Main Highways Board, 'said that about 7 a.m. on November 24 a bus arrived at the Devonport wharf carrying 27 sitting and 18 persons standing. In addition to this, it had been ascertained that six other passengers had already been set down on the way to the wharf. Mr. Alderton gave his explanation, stating that if the travelling public would take one of the buses which left five minutes earlier the overloading would not occur. The remedy appeared to lie in the hands of the persons using the buses. The inspector added that the company had been warned about overloading several times, but the overloading had gone on. Mr. McKean imposed a fine of £2.
