CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.
CONFERENCE AT ADELAIDE. TAX ASSOCIATION FORMED. (By telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The formation of a Catholic taxpayers' association, composed entirely of laymen, was one of the results of the Roman Catholic education conference held at Adelaide recently in connection with the centenary celebrations.
Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, who attended the celebrations, in an interview, said that the Catholic part of the celebration's took an educational foini, and all matters concerning the education of Catholic children were discussed, and in particular the position of Catholic schools in the Commonwealth. Delegates were present from all parts of Australia and New Zealand, and as tar away as Canada. One of the most important results ot the conference was the formation of the taxpayers' association, which, during the next few years, would take steps to place the position of private schools before the country, with the object of securing part of the taxation paid by Catholics for their own schools. The Catholic schools in Australia were in the same position as they were in New Zealand. They were not subsidised. In every part of the British Empire except Australia and New* Zealand State aid was given to private schools, irrespective of religion. It was possible that the Catholic taxpayers' association similar to the one formed in Australia might be formed in New- Zealand.
