STRAWBERRIES CHEAPER.
VEGETABLE MARKET FIRM.
There was only a fair demand to-day
at the eitj- markets for apples, ancl pears were slow of sale. The quantity of hothouse tomatoes coming forward is being maintained and values remain fairly firm Values of strawberries have dropped during the last two days, due to weather conditions retarding sales. The market this morning was rather weak. Gooseberries are still selling well and values are steady. Lemons are in good demand for good quality. Peaches, plums and apricots are increasing in quantity, but there is a great variation in the quality. Good quality cherries are still selling well. The market is bare of oranges, the next shipment of' Jamaican fruit being due next Friday. .The Matua is expected on Wednesday afternoon with the largest shipment she has carried of bananas from Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. She has also a good quantity of pineapples, water melons, kumaras, pumpkins, pawpaws, etc. Quotations: — , Apples, Delicious, 6/ to 10/ per case; Dougherty, 5/ to 9/; Stunner. 6/ to 10/; pears, P. Barry, 6/ to 9/; Winter Nelis, S/ to 12/; tomatoes, -hothouse, choice, 9d to 1/ per lb; others, 6d to 8d; grapefruit, New Zealand, 7/ to 12/ per case; lemons, choice cured, 8/ to 11/; others, 3/ to 7/; bananas, 7/ to 27/; grapes, Californian, red, 25/ per chest; black, 30/; peaches, i/ to 8/ per case; plums, extra choice, 8/ to 16/: apricots, Thames, 5/ to 11/6; strawberries, Captain Cook, 1/ to 1/3 per chip; Marguerite, 1/ to 1/2; loganberries, 3d to lid; gooseberries, 5/ to 5/6 per case; cherries, 10/ to 14/. Vegetables. Cabbage was still in heavy supply to-day, with a slight advance in price. Green peas are still maintaining high values and beans were a little lower. New season's marrows were in keen demand, also good beetroot anil spinach. Cauliflowers were realising high prices. Cucumbers were selling cheaply for this time of the year, due to cold weather conditions. Quotations: — Asparagus, 6d to 1/1 per bundle; beet, 1/ to 1/6 per dozen; broad beans, 5/ to 3/6 per bag; carrots, 8d to 1/8 per dozen; cauliflowers, 5/ per sack; cabbages, on benches, 1/ to 2,'6 per dozen; cucumbers, 2/ to 5/; French beans, hothouse, 8d to 1/ per lb; green peas, 8/ to 14/ per bag; kumaras (Island), 10/ to 11/ per cwt: lettuce, 2/ to 9/ per case; marrows, 2/6 to 8/6 per dozen; onions, Canadian, 22/ per cental; new season's, 5/ to 6/ per bag; potatoes, 2/G to 4/; pumpkins, Triamble, 20/ to 30/ per sack; parsnips, 9d to 1/3 per dozen; radish, 6<l; rhubarb, 1/6 to J/6; spinach, 1/ to 2/3; spring onions, 3d to 9d per bundle; swedes, 3/ to 5/ per oag; turnips, Cd to 9d per dozen. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was very heavy and the demand .vas keen. The prices paid stand maltered. Selling rates were as follow: — Cockerels, heavy breeds, prime, 2/9 to 5/ ;ach; not prime, 1,6 up; light -breeds, prime, 1/9 to 4/; not prime, 1/3 up; fat -oosters, heavy breeds, prime, 2/3 to 2/9; ight breeds, 1/9 to 2/3; fat .hens, heavy jreeds, 3/6 to 4/; -light breeds, 2/ to 3/3; )ullets, heavy breeds, best, 2/9 to 4/; smaller, 1/6 up; light breeds, best, 2/9 to I/; smaller, 1/3 up; drakes, young, prime, !/ to 3/3; smaller, 1/6 up; ducks, young, !/9 to 3/6; old, 1/6 to 2/3; drakes, old, ,/6 to 2/3; cockerel chicks, heavy breeds, id up; light breeds, Id up; guinea fowls, [/ to 6/. Butter and Eggs. Egg prices are unchanged, as follow:— Hen: First grade, 1/4% per dozen; B, .'O%; C, l/OVi. Duck: First grade, -1/3%; i, 1/2%; C, 1/o'/a. Farmers' Butter.—lOVsd to 1/1 p'et- lb.
