GRAIN AND PRODUCE.
ALL MARKETS FIRM
JAVA MAIZE ON SALE
There is a marked firmness in the local grain and produce markets, and values all round are ruling at high levels. The market is certainly running badly for stock feeders, who need to supplement their pastures wit'h cereal products. Australian barley is steadily firming, and merchants have raised their price for the clipped to 5/ per bushel, and unclipped 3d less.
Maize is still scarce, and very dear. The Java shipment has been fumigated, and is now selling, but the landed costs were heavy, and these, plus fumigation charges, have brought the price to a high level. Local stocks are hard to procure, and merchants have raised their selling rates to 7/1 per bushel, and the same figure is asked for Javan. The position with regard to maize supplies is so unsatisfactory that arrangements have been made for another shipment -from Java, due as far ahead as May, 1D37. The wheat market is very firm, and merchants report greait difficulty in obtaining graded lines. Chief business is now being done in undergrade wheat at from Id to 2d below the pi'ieo of graded. There have been heavy deliveries of local pollard in recent weeks, and supplies are not free at the moment. However, it is not anticipated that any serious shortage will occur. Meanwhile, there is a steady demand for Australian pollard, despite its relatively high price. Since last report new potatoes have been in free supply, and pi-ices have eased. Sales were made down to 3/6 per sugar bag, but rains in the last few days have interfered with digging, and to-day merchants are asking 3/9 a bag through store. Candian onions are in moderate demand at 25/ per 1001b bag. Wholesale Current Prices. Pollard and Bran.—Mill prices: Pollard, £6 10/ per ton; bran, £0.
