MONEY FOR HOUSES.
DAIRY FACTORY WORKERS,
GOVERNMENT DECISION.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Monday,
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, announced to-day the Government's intention of operating the provisions of the 1919 Housing Act, giving the Government power to advance money to co-operative dairy factories for housing their employees. "Money will be available at 3 per cent for housing workers associated with such factories," said Mr. Savage. "The housing will have to conform to the standards adopted by the Ministry of Housing, and will have to be erected with New Zealand materials. Dairy factories will be .expected to borrow the money and erect the houses, and if they dispose of a house to an employee or employees, to insert some provision preventing trafficking at a profit. "Already communications have been received from dairy factories anxious to avail themselves of money under a scheme such as this, and the Government is pleased to assist farmers to do anything that will enable them to retain the labour necessary to their industries in their own localities and under decent conditions." Mr. Savage added, "The Government is also considering to what extent moneys can be advanced to firms prepared to subscribe reasonable deposits for housing their employees. An application or two has been received already from firms willing to find small deposits, and this question is now being considered."
