FRENCH DISASTER
FIFTY-TWO DEAD. Horror 'of Powder Factory Explosion. DREDGING ~FOR BODIES. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) MARSEILLES, November 17. In tlie St. Chamas powder factory explosion 52 people were killed and 100 injured. The majority of the bodies have been recovered but were unidentifiable owing to their mutilated condition. Fifty of those in hospital are in a critical condition. The Defence Minister, M. Daladier, with experts, flew to the scene. The victims will receive a national funeral. A hole in the ground, 70 yards across filled with muddy water, marks the site of the first explosion and is being dredged for bodies. Secret police are making Inquiries, but are hampered by the second blast having killed all witnesses of the first explosion. « Blaze after blaze followed the main explosion. Rescuers toiled feverishly amid scenes of horror all night long under searchlights from a neighbouring air port, which were the only means of effective illumination.
