BANANAS FIRMER. i RHUBARB PRICES DROP. KEEN DEMAND FOR ORANGES. Good quality dessert apples and pears were in fair demand to-day at the city markets, and hothouse tomatoes sold well. There was a good inquiry for oranges, and grapefruit realised higher rates. Pineapples were in short supply and brought high prices, while grapes were rather slow of sale. Bidding was keen for strawberries and cherries, although some of the latter sold at low prices, owing to their poor condition. Good supplies of gooseberries are now coming forward and supplies of hothouse tomatoes are increasing. Ripe bananas sold at higher prices than last week. Quotations:— Fruit. Apples: Delicious 6/ to 11/ per case, Dougherty 4/ to 8/6, Granny Smith 3/ to 5/, Rome Beauty 4/ to 7/, Statesman 6/ to 11/. Pears: P. Barry 6/ to 8/6 per case, Winter Nelis 7/6 to 12/. Tomatoes: hothouse 6d to lOd per lb. Oranges: Jamaican 35/ to 42/ per case. Grapefruit: New Zealand, ex. choice S/ to 12/ per case, others 4/ to 7/, Californian 35/, Jamaican 30/. Lemons: Choice cured S/ to 10/ per case, others 3/ to 7/. 1 Bananas: ripe 10/ to 28/ per case. Pines: Queensland 23/' to 26/ per case. Grapes: C'alifornian, red 28/ per chest, white 28/, black 38/. Plums: Christmas, cooking 3/ per case. Strawberries: Captain Cook, ex. choice 1/6 to 1/9 per chip, others 1/ to 1/5, Marguerite, ex. choice 1/5 to 1/7, others 9d to 1/3. Cherries: 10/ per case. Vegetables. Cabbages were still in oversupply today, anil it was impossible to clear the supplies offered. Fair quantities of cauliflower were available, and although the quality was comparatively poor, they brought higher prices than last week. Peas and beans were in fair supply and sold at high values. Outdoor cucumbers are now arriving in much heavier quantities, and values are consequently easier than last week. Good quality lettuce, carrots and beet sold well, but supplies of rhubarb were much heavier and prices dropped. Quotations: — Asparagus, 5d to 9d per bundle; beet, 9d to 1/2 per dozen; broad beans, 4/ to 5/6 per bag; carrots, 1/ to 2/ per dozen; cauliflowers, 6/ to 8/ per sack; cabbages, 9d to 3/ per sack, on benches 4d to 1/ per dozen; cucumbers, 2/6 to 5/ per dozen; French beaus. hothouse 9d to 1/4 per lb; green peas, 6/ to 12/ per bag; leeks, 1/ to 2/ per dozen; lettuce, 2/ to 9/ per case; marrows, new season's 2/ to 5/6 per dozen; onions, Canadian 22/6 per bag; potatoes, new No. 1 3/ to 4/6 per bag, • No. 2 1/ to 2/: pumpkins, 15/ to 24/ per cwt; parsnips. 8d to 1/ per dozen; radish, 6<l to 9d per dozen: rhubarb, 1/ to 3/ per dozen; spinach, 9d to 1/6 per dozen; spring onions, 3d to 9d per bundle; turnips, 6d to 1/ per dozen. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was heavy and the demand was keen. All prices show an inclination to fall, except fat hens. Selling rates were as follow: —- Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime 3/ to 5/6 each, not prime 1/9 up; light breeds, prime 2/ to 4/, not prime 1/3 up. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime 2/3 to 2/9 each, light breeds 1/9 to 2/3. Hens: Hc-avy breeds 3/6 to 4/6, light breeds 2/ to 3/6. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best 3/ to 4/3 each, smaller 1/6 up; light breeds, best 3/ to 4/3. smaller 1/6 up. Drakes: Young, prime 2/3 to 3/3 each, smaller 1/6 up. Ducks: Young 2/9 to 4/. old 1/6 to 2/3. Drakes: Old 1/6 to 2/3. Geese: 4/6 to 7/. Turkey hens: 5/ to 9/. Gobblers: 8/ to 17/6. Cockerel Chicks: Heavy breeds 6d up, light breeds IVid up. Guinea fowls: 4/ to 6/. Ducklings: 9d. Butter and Eggs. Egg prices are unchanged, as follow:— Hen: First 1/6% dozen, B 1/5%. C 1/2%. Duck: First 1/5%, B 1/4%, C 1/2%. Butter. —Farmers', lOd to U%d per lb.
