MAIN HIGHWAYS.
COST OF MAINTENANCE. NATIONAL EXPENDITURE. Supplementary to a letter stating that as from November 1 approved maintenance and construction of main highways would be paid wholly out of the main highways account, a further letter from the Main Highways Board, received at t-o-day's meeting of the Manukaii County Council, stated that no further main highways would be declared this year. "What the Government gives with one hand it takes away with the other.'" remarked tile chairman. Mr. F. M. Waters. '"This will probably apply to next year, too. so that it will be two years before any more main highways are declared." The council was advised that any contracts for highway construction must be completed by the council, but that all work done after November 1 would be paid for in full from the main highways account. The Main Highways Board would consider the purchase of up-to-date plant in good condition, but not worn out or obsolete plant.
