PENNANT BOWLING.

SECOND ROUND COMPLETED. MANY POSITIONS CHANGED. SINGLES A FORTNIGHT HENCE. (By TRUNDLER.) Bowlers were unfortunate on Saturday in just missing by 24 hours an almost perfect afternoon. However, light showers caused only two or three brief interruptions, so there was no suggestion of curtailing in any way the second round in the pennant matches, but no progress was made in club games. It was only to be expected that big changes would be made in the positions of the leading clubs, but even the cold afternoon did not explain the crash of the four leading clubs in section A, Hallyburton Johnstone, Balmoral, KeniDera and Stanley, enabling Carlton to step up from fifth place to the top, with only one more win than on the previous Saturday. Mangere remains rather comfortably at the . top of section B, with Otahuhu replacing Grey Lynn and Ponsonby for second honours. However, all these changes can be analysed by a scrutiny of the appended table, showing the number of rinks played by each club, the wins and losses in" the second round, the resulting percentage of wins in the two rounds combined, and for comparison the percentage when only the first round \\ as played:— SECTIOX A . Ist

The Singles Tournament. Intending competitors in the open singles tournament close on Wednesday of this week, to commence with five rounds of section play on Tuesday, December 1, and then continuing on the two-life system, outright section winners and section ties to qualify for post-section play. Private conversations during the past week suggest that there will be another very full entry, some players frankly confessing that, their chief reason for competing is to. get a. little practice for their own- club championship, as most bowlers in Auckland have not plaj ed a game of singles since last March. In all probability tea or twelve greens will be required for'the first day, so it will be a convenience if other players who are disengaged on that day, and are competent to officiate as umpires or markers, would submit,,their names to the secretary of their club or the secretary of the centre. The qualification is included because on previous occasions the shortage of competent officials lias necessitated including some who were painfully incompetent. It is unlikely that there will be a shortage on the second and third days. ;■ , ,• j. In this connection it is interesting to note that there is apparently the same difficulty elsewhere, for English papers are full of complaints about umpires giving incorrect decisions, and markets failing in their duties. Similarly, in Sydney in reply to a question, Boomerang gave in the "Referee" only last month, a list of the worst decisions given byumpires in recent tournaments, all tor want of appealing to the book, instead of guessing, so Auckland bowlers need ndfc think they are the only people who occasionally forget that precaution. Tournament Incidents. An unusual incident occurred at a oneday tournament the other day, on which a ruling has been requested. When a skip went to the ditch to search tor his second bowl and failed to find it he remarked: "My other bowl must be at the other end, so the last head was not completed." Forthwith he went to the scoring board and rubbed out the 4 that had been registered against him. This is rather a good idea, and it is strange that such a "brilliant scheme has never occurred to anyone before, for all he has to do, if there are 7 or 8 against him when only 15''bowls have been played, is to leave his v Second bowl on the bank, or wherever it is, and then claim a dead head five minutes later! Unfortunately there is no law directly prohibiting this, so it would appear that one is necessary, in spite of the occasional suggestion that there are too many already, for the skip in question has played in fifty tournaments and others may' also try to get away with it. ■ In - Australia they seem to think- this is necessary, for rule 25 begins thus: "When the end is completed, or deemed to be completed, the two opponents or directors shall mutually agree on its result, and when once such agreement is arrived at it shall be final and binding on both parties." Apparently the nearest to this m our laws is No. 76: "After the last bowl of a head stops running, a half minute shall be allowed, if either side so require, before the shot is counted." This clearly implies that after half a minute has elapsed the head cannot be altered, and that when the shot is "counted" the points for that particular head are definitely settled. The usual Public Service pairs tournament, three 'bowls, will be played on St. •Andrew's Day, November 30, on the Auckland and Mount Eden greens. Intending competitors are invited to specify if they have any preference as to where they play. Visitors from Australia. Mr. M. R. Hornibrook, president of the Queensland Bowling Association, called in at some of the larger clubs on Saturday, Mr. A. J- Parker taking the opportunity to show him round the city and the southern suburbs, as he is already well acquainted with the harbour and the North Shore, particularly from a bridge point of view. He is returning in January, as leader of the party of Queensland bowlers who have accepted the invitation to tour the Dominion, probably irriving in Auckland on January 11. It is not yet known how many are doming, but the following had nominated a fortnight ago: J. Allison and F. C. Cocking (Central MiN Club, Isis), Len White (Bigenden), H. A. Reed and F. Monsowj D. Kerr and J. B. JJaTtfjir (Bi'rgowan), W. Kingston, W. Ker and F. C. Ker >Vese ar* _\ll in the Wide Bay , district, in the northern part of Queens- : land, and in addition there will be from tlie Brisbane metropolitan area: C. Sterling (Hamilton), O. Stubbs (Yeronga), ¥ ,4- Managhan (Yeronga Club presi- , (lent), J. Ryan and H. Crouch (New ' 1< arm). These names will all be familiar to those who have fipenfc a winter in Queensland s wonderful climate, but Mr Crouch is also known through having formerly, been a member of tlie Terrace En>] ciub (Palmeraton North).
