LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
MEETING OF COUNCIL - , TRIBUTES TO WEST COAST. The management and support of Rugby League football on the West Coast of the South Island for many years received recognition at the meeting of the New Zealand Council, Mr. E. Stall worthy presiding, last evening, when two applications for financial assistance were favourably dealt with. The West Coast League (Greymouth) reported that as the result of recent severe floods sheep worth £82 and damage to dressing shed, house and other losses at Wingham Park, amounting to £131 10/, had been suffered. In addition, the league had been affected by 12 successive wet week-ends in the latter part of the season. Thus, plans to erect new dressing sheds had to be abandoned. The league asked for a grant of £100 toward meeting these heavy losses. After discussion, Mr. J. Redwood, \vest Coast delegate, supported the application and moved that at least £65 be granted. Mr. W. O. Carlaw (secretary) said that in 16 years' official association with the game, the "West Coast had never troubled the authorities with financial requests and the code had made solid progress in that province on its own initiative. He was therefore strongly in favour of the motion. Mr. R. Doble (Auckland) supported Mr. Carlaw and the motion was carried. The Inangahua Sub-League of the VV est Coast asked for a grant of £10 toward £15 spent on the -transport of its coach J Cutbush, who, upon returning from England last year, had entered enthusiastically upon liis work and had conferied great benefits upon the standard of play by his activities. It had been assumed that a request for a grant foe the payment of Cutbush would be met by the council, but it transpired that the coach had nowaccepted re-engagement in England. Mr. Carlaw stated that Inangahua League had also made great progress without making applications to the council, and he considered that Inangahua s request in ..this instance should be acceded to.
