POVERTY BAY CLUB.

THE FIRST DAY. LEGATEE THE MAKARAKAMINNOW WINS OCTOBER. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") GISBORNE, this day. Ideal conditions prevailed for the opening of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting yesterday. There was a large attendance, and the. going was good. During the afternoon the sum of £4276 was put through the totalisator. compared with £2376 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £1900. The four acceptors went to tlie barrier for the First Hurdles, and speculation was fairly evenly divided, less than £40 separating the first favourite, Summerhill, from the outsider, Sybil Song. Emotion was the early leader, but after the first jump gave way to Sybil Song, with Summerhill, who was jumping badly, close up. Emotion took charge again temporarily in the back stretch, but at the western bend Sybil Song resumed charge, and the result from then on was never in doubt, Sybil Song winning by a length and a half.'' In the final dash, after jumping the last hurdle, Victor Colima put in a strong challenge for second place, and finished only a neck behind Emotion, with Summerhill close up. The withdrawal of Unexpected and Minnow saw seven go to the post for the Junction Handicap. Quaint and Small Boy were made firm favourites, the former (having some £25 more on her chances, with Perinycomequick as third choice, another £30 behind. Pennycomequick jumped, out smartly from the barrier, followed by Chaytor, Small Boy, Quaint, Flying Mimic, Peter Piper and Mahala. Along the back Small Boy moved up_ to within a length of Pennycomequick, but at the five furlongs Quaint overhauled Small Boy, with Flying Mimic next. Halfway round the bend Quaint headed Pennycomequick, but the latter took charge again entering the straight. Small Boy and Quaint put in a strong challenge, Quaint being the first to fall back, but Pennycomequick passed the post a neck in front of Small Boy, with Quaint two .lengths hack, followed by Flying Mimic, Chaytor and Mahala. Mata Hari and De Friend were hot favourites for the Flying Handicap, the former being better supported by £10. Symcony was first to show out, followed by Mata Hari, De Friend, Lordly Knight and Hunting Mars. At the half-mile De Friend ran into second position. At the far turn Mata Hari and De Friend overhauled Symcony, and these two fought out a rattling finish, De Friend gaining • the decision by a nose, with Lordly Knight a length and three-quarters back third. Symcony was fourth. The scratching of Wasteland in the Makaraka Handicap left a field of four to contest the stake, Legatee being made a hot favourite, with Blygain next in demand. From barrier rise Legatee went out, and was never (headed. Blygain was three lengths behind him in the back stretch, but closed the gap in the straight and finished a length and three-quarters away, followed by Bothwell, who was four lengths further back. The largest field of the day paraded in the Maiden Scurry, for which Glacier, Miss Blue, Hunting Crop and Hunting Spy were scratched. Fine Stitch was made a hot favourite, the bracket, Shani and Royal Spades, being next in demand with £60 less. Joe Louis had just over £30 invested on hie chance. Kitchenette was first out, followed by Rapata, Waiata a,nd Hunting Jay. At the half-mile- Shani ran into second position, and at the'bend Kitchenette hung 'out and interfered with Shani and Royal Spades, who was close up, attended by Fine Stitch and Jaybird. The field closed up entering the straight, where Fine Stitch ran to the front. Joe Louis and Pirima put in a strong challenge, but Fine Stitch won by a length from Joe Louis, with Pirima a similar distance away, Shani being fourth, followed by Jaybird and Royal Spades. Victor Colima and Glacier were withdrawn from the Roeeland Hack (for gentlemen riders), leaving only three to go to the post. Speculation was evenly divided, Unexpected having a small advantage. Miss Blue took charge at the start, and was never headed, being follow'ed by Flying Mimic and Unexpected. Flying Mimic made a good effort in the straight, but could get no nearer than a length when the post was reached, with Unexpected three lengths back. All started in the October Hack, Small Boy being made a good favourite, while Minnow was next best backed. Hunter's Morn was the early leader, but soon gave way to Huntette, who carried on the running to the bend, when Minnow took ■charge, followed by Gay Hunter and Fossicker. A good race resulted, Huntette, Minnow and Fossicker being almost on terms half-way down the straight, followed by Gay Hunter. The pace was too hot for Huntette, who fell back, Minnow winning by half a length from Fossicker, with Gay Hunter a length back, and Small Boy-fourth. Later results were:— JUNCTION HANDICAP of £ 00.
