TAXI BUSINESS.
"CLEAN UP" PREDICTED. SITTING OF COMMISSION. The fact that he had perused the files of the commission which is inquiring into the taxi and carrying business in New Zealand, and his personal belief that the result of the inquiry would be that the taxi business would be "cleaned up" was commented on this morning by the secretary of the Auckland Drivers' Union, Mr. C. Lindsay. He also stated that he had been advised that the commission would commence to sit in Auckland on November 2 next. The commission- is already issuing in Auckland questions to be completed by concerns, whether limited liability companies, partnerships or individuals, which own taxis that are driven \by owners or employees on a wage basis'; by concerns which lease stands from local bodies, telephones from the P. and T. Department and either own or do not own cars; by owner-drivers who work with a company arid pay a weekly levy; by drivers on a comrai« 'on basis; and by persons engaged in t.io town carrying business. The questionnaire seeks particulars relating to the nature of organisations, the number of persons engaged, the average number of hours on duty each day, the capital invested in concerns, the number of taxis owned, the balancesheets for the past three financial years and estimates of revenue and expenses.
