CLOUD OF SULPHUR.
PHENOMENON AT SEA. EXPERIENCE OF SHIP'S CREW. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WHAKATANE, Friday. The crew of the motor vessel Toa had a unique experience while on the way from Auckland to Wlmkatane yesterday. When off Maketu the vessel ran into a cloud of sulphur, which extended about 20 miles and was so dense that the helmsman could not see the length of the ship ahead. Light fleck-3 of sulphur fell on the deck, tarnished the brasswork, and caused tho eyes of those on deck to smart. Captain McDonald said he could have understood the appearance of the sulphur cloud had the wind been blowing from the direction of White Island, but at the time there was a light wind off the shore.
