STILL HOPEFUL.
FISHERMEN NEGOTIATING. SETTLEMENT EXPECTED. Although yesterday's hope of an immediate settlement of the dispute between the fishermen and the dealers was disappointed, it is expected that an agreement will be reached before the week-end. Before the dealers will agree to pay the fishermen the 2d a lb for snapper that they demand, the dealers wish to come to an agreement among themselves to eliminate price-cutting and competition on the Australian market and fix the price there at such a level as will enable them to pay the fishermen 2d a lb for snapper. The means by which this object might be attained have been under discussion amongst the dealers for the past two days, and a further conference is being held in camera this afternoon, in the presence of the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. R. E. Price, and Mr. E. W. J. Bowden, representing the Department of Industries and Commerce. Pending the receipt of advice from Australia regarding their proposals for the marketing of Auckland fish there, it is expected that the dealers will draw up a temporary agreement for consideration by the fishermen at a meeting of all the parties later in the day, such agreement to remain in force until satisfactory arrangements regarding the Australian market can be made.
