N.Z. OPEN GOLF TITLE SHAW LEADS JACK BLACK GUY AND T. GALLOWAY NEXT PAX SMITH AND JEFFERY EXCEL. 1 (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. The first round of the New Zealand opei golf championship was played to-day, A J. Shaw leading the field with a fine scor of 70. The par of the course is 74. Shaw was closely followed by an. ama teur, L. Black, with 71. Only another stroke away were twi professionals, Tom Galloway (Maunga kiekiej and A. E. Guy. Then followed a string of amateursthree on 73 (the youthful Pax Smith Akarana. L. C'athro and J. li. Hobbs) two on 74 (M. Moore and E. W. Thur good), and seven on 75 (ineludh-g the 16 year-old Taranaki competitor J. Jeff cry) three professionals also finishing on tha mark. The title-holder, A. Murray, returned ; disappointing card of 76, as did anothei Auckland professional and former title holder, E. J. Moss, from whom much wai expected.
