GLENDOWIE TITLE.

AKARANA CLUB.

JACK STEDMAN VICTOR. € I BEATS S. R. SELF, 3 AND 2. : I The final of the Glcndowie Golf Club's senior championship between S. R. Self and J. E. Stedman resulted in victory for the latter, 3 and 2. The first few holes were played in even bogey figures, Self's long game being superior to Stedman's, as throughout the first round it remained, but fell away during the second round. Self drew first blood with a birdie 4, to which Stedman replied at the eighth with a 3. Both were out in 38 and the game all square on the first turn for home. Three on the tenth green by Stedman gave Self the hole, but the eleventh Self also putted badly to halve a certain win. Playing the seventeenth Self had established a 2 up lead by accurate golf, whilst Stedman had struck a bad patch. However, the latter's second to the green lay two inches from the pin, and gave him a sure 3, and they went to l%nch, Self 1 up, with a medal 78 to Stedman's 79. The nineteenth went to Stedman to square the game, and it remained so until the twenty-second, where Stedman, overrunning the green, missed his return to let Self in (4 to 5); Self 1 up. The twenty-third went to Stedman, and all square again appeared on the score sheet. The next saw Stedman settling down, and his second came to rest on the back bank of the green, whence he chipped in to hole out in a birdie 3 and for the first time took the lead. Self had played consistently, and his match temperament was an invaluable aid. Self took tin next in 3to 4, but Stedman accounted for the twentysixth in par figures. The twenty-eighth went to Stedman in 5, then poor putting by bath on the short eleventh halved the hole in s's. Stedman became 3 up at the thirtieth, where his putt lippeel the hole to stymie Self, who proceeded to help Stedman along by hitting his ball into the can. The thirty-first was Self's in par 3. At the long thirty- • second two 'perfect drives saw even seconds and found both 50 yards in front of the green, which Stedman found. Self's was pushed out and his next went through the green, giving Stedman the hole, to be 3up and 4 to play. Self made no mistake with the next, two good woods to the green, and two there gave him the hole in birdie 4 to 5. This made Stedman 2 up ( and 3 to play. The game ended at the thirty-fourth. (■ With equal drives of over 250 yds and ( second to the edge of the green, Stedman s s chip finished six inches from the hole, t whereas Self's overran and he missed his return, the match thus going to Stedman, 3 and 2. Stedman has been knocking at the door so long that his win is very gratifying.

The final of the Akarana Golf Club's championship svas decided over 36 holes during tlie week-end between P. G. F. Smith and G. Ooitman. Smith won on the thirty-fifth green by 2 and 1. There was little be.tween the pair in the morning round, which was completed In an approximate 76, the players going to lunch all square. At the opening hole In the afternoon both struck trouble Coltman taking the lead with a win in five, Smith equalising at the twenty-first where Coltman three putted. No change took place until the 530-yard twenty-fourth hole where Smith chipped dead for a win in five. Coltman's three at the twenty-fifth was a winner all the. way, but Smith took the lead ag.iin when his opponent played the "twenty-sixth weakly. Following a poor second with a grand recovery Coltman [ holed a good putt for a four at the twenty- [ .seventh. Smith missing a short one to ; leave tlio match all square. Both narrowly missed putts for the birdie three at the twenty-eighth, while at the twentyninth Smith's second caught the bunkers guarding the green. Coltman crashed an iron to tlio middle of the green, but threw away an opportunity by three putting, the hole being halved in fives._ The thirtieth was halved in fours, while at the short thirty-first both played excellent tee shots to find the greiMi. Smith was short with his putt and this allowed Coltman to make a successful attempt with, a stymie. The win placed Go it in an one "up on his youthful rival, and at the thirtysecond both were nicely on in two. Smith almost holed his threo and Coltman :n making a determined effort to consolidate his leading position over-ran the hole and missed the four-foot return. This proved the turning point in the match, for at the next hole Coltman found an almost unplayable. lie with his second, Smith taking the lead again with a win in Ave. At the short thirty-fourth Smith holed a grand putt for a two, his third of the match, and he went to the thirty-fifth tee dormy two. Smith was assured of a four at this hole and to keep the game alive Coltman made a courageous attempt with a 30-footor which failed to drop. In the intermediate final M. Kiely made a good recovery in his match with W. E. Butler over 36 holes and,- after being 4 down with six holes to play, he eventually won on the last green. The junior championship will be decided over 36 holes during the week-fend between A. Ilowey-Walker and C. G. Swallow. The sixth and final round for the Tyler Memorial Cup will be played on Saturday. A handicap medal match will be played in conjunction, when competitors will be divided into two grades, with a trophy for the winner of each division.
