WORK ON THE GRASS.

STAR PRONTO'S EFFORT. f I AUDO PATCH PLEASES. The flags were out 40ft on the course proper at Epsom this morning for horses claiming engagements at the .Auckland spring meeting this month. Ihe going was holding after the recent rain and in consequence times were slow. Princess Onyx opened proceedings by running a mile and a quarter in 3.7 2-5, her last half mile taking 1.12 2-5. This mare should have excellent prospects at the meeting. Great Sonoma went away 3s in front of Young Rodney, with a further 2s to Lucky Love, in an essay over a mile and a half. After reaching the ( mile in 2.37 3-5, Great Sonoma broke and Young Rodney continued'on in front to just shade his companion in 3.47, the last half mile in 1.14. Lucky Love registered 3.43 3-5 and was doing his work well at the end. Manna's Son was not after time while completing two miles in 5.18, the last half mile taking 1.20. He was showing signs of soreness. The novice trotter Rita's Triumph was timed to run two miles in 5.17, the last mile taking 2.41. Count Parrisli, after breaking at his first attempt to go away from the mile and a half poet, was taken back and trotted without mistake to record 4.4 3-5. Mountain Sun went away 4s in front of Munga Tangi, with Is to Travis and another 3s to Star Pronto, from the twomile post. After running half a mile they were joined by Audo Patch and Bedford, while at the mile and a quarter Bismuth joined in. . They raced in close attendance until the straight was reached, where Audo Patch was in charge, and in a fine finish held on to just hold off Star Pronto. Audo Patch ran the mile and a half in 3.40 2-5 and the last half mile in 1.10 2-5, while Bedford, who woe third, took 3.41. Star Pronto was timed to complete the two miles in 4.47 and the last half mile in 1.9 1-5. He worked very attractively. Munga Tangi recorded 4.55. It was a fine workout and resembled a race. Pirate's Last and Gold Pointer were associated over a mile and a quarter, but Gold Pointer stopped over the last furlong and Pirate's Last finished clear in 3.12, the final four furlongs taking 1.11. Charteris Bay led Gay Sister throughout a mile and a half in 3.51 the final half mile occupying 1.11 2-5. Queenie Direct joined in at the mile and a quarter and was timed to complete the task in 3.16. SECRETARY RETIRES. Mr. J. B. Norris, secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Association, has retired after 32 years' service, and Mr. W. H. Larcombe, who ha 6 been his assistant for the last 17 years, hae been appointed to the position. He will take over his new duties on November 1.
