PLACING OF MEN.
WAITAKERE SCENIC DRIVE. QUESTION OF PROPORTION. The subject of the Waitakere Scenic Drive came before the New Lynn Borough Council at last night's meeting. The employment division of the Department of Labour replied to the council's inquiry as to what -system had been adopted in the placing of men on the new drive. It advised that generally speaking the principle adopted had been that of placing men from the various boroughs in proportion to the contributions which the respective boroughs had ma'de to the general fund. The Mayor, Mr. George Lawson, pointed out that this was hardly fair to the small local bodies who were unable to make a large contribution to the fund and had many able men with large families in close proximity to the work. After all, he said, the work was a national one and the Government was finding the bulk of the money. The council decided to make representations to the Minister of Public Works and the Hon. H. G. R. Mason on the subject.
