INTOXICATED MAORI.
TWO ASSAULTS ADMITTED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
RAETIHI, this day. Shouting "I'm Detective Williams. You've double-crossed me, and you're a sly grogger," a young Maori, Moa. Williams, assaulted two men at Raetihi on Saturday. He was arrested by Constable Chesnutt and was charged at tha Police Court, before Messrs. W. H. Sandford and L. W. Nation, J.P.'s, with assaulting Fred Coury and George Williams, and also with being drunk and disorderly. Constable Chesnutt, who prosecuted, ,said accused accosted Fred Coury, demanding liquor, and then struck him.' Going then to a private hotel he saw Williams lying on a couch. The Maori shouted, "I'll shoot you." After demanding liquor accused caught Williams by the tie and struck him twice. Mr. J. N. Ritchie, for accused, admitted the correctness of the constable's statement. Accused, he said, had had two stiff whiskies and became fighting drunk, as well as being under the imprest sion that he was a detective. On accused agreeing to take out a prohibition order, he was convicted and discharged on two counts and was convicted and fined £2 and costs on the charge of assaulting Williams, in default seven days' imprisonment.
