GIFT TO SCHOOL.
art teaching material
PRESENTED TO KING'S COLLEGE. The Carnegie Corporation of New York has made yet another generous contribution toward cultural education in Auckland in its recent gift to King's College of a set of fine arts teaching and reference material. Included in the gift are over 100 volumes of important standard works on art published in England, America, France and Germany. The history of art is fully covercd, the subject matter embracing painting, sculpture, architecture and the crafts, from primitive times to the present day. Modern developments in painting are dealt with in a number of books by such eminent writers and art critics "as Meier Graeff, Roger Fry and Wilenski. The collection also contains biographies of famous artists, technical handbooks, monographs and works on the philosophy of art. A striking feature of the grant and one of great value in lectures on art is the large and valuable set of reproductions. Over 1000 of these plates are neatly cased and indexed. The reproductions are in colour and in black and white, the greater number of the latter being actual photographs. They arc arranged according to various historical periods and include paintings, sculpture, architecture, manuscripts, mosaics, stained glass, ivories and metal work. Ancient, medieval, oriental, Renaissance and modern art are all illustrated with representative and well-known examples. A pleasing feature is the number of large colour reproductions of paintings by notable impressionist and postimpressionist painters. Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet and Pissarro are represented, as also are Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gosh, Matisse, Picasso and John Nash. In addition, there are a number of other portfolios containing several hundred plates in colour illustrating historic ornament, textiles and ceramics. Original prints of etchings, engravings and allied reproductive processes are contained in other portfolios, while a special portfolio is devoted to large reproductions of water colours by Van Gogh. The acquisition of this equipment has already created considerable interest, and as it embraces such a wide range of subjects, it is capable of being used extensively as illustrative material in all the art courses at the college.
