ORAKEI MAORIS' HOUSING.

There was an interesting article in the "Star" on the entrancing beauties of the Waitakere ridgeway drive, but one of the statements concerning it seems to pc not right. It is, "The present nq man's land will be free.to the public as a heritage and a right." If it is a "heritage and a right," why liavi not the descendants of the Maori tribe from which Auckland was "purchased decent houses at Orakei? I do not necessarily mean modern buildings; the picturesque exterior of the Teal Maori dwelling could be preserved, while the interior could be modernised. I have not long been in Auckland, but I have seen the untidy, unhealthy-looking settlement of Maoris at Orakei, and it seems to me that there was an unequal bargain when they exchanged their original beautiful setting for their present one. However, sir, I am one who is only WONDERING.
