LESSON OF MANUKAU.
ORGANISATION AND POLICY. (To the Editor.) Is Mr. Doidge not deluding himself when he imagines that the Manukau election was won by superior organisation? Was the victory' not due to the acceptable poiicy propounded' by the victor, and the absence of constructive proposals by the so-called Nationalists? I D declaring that the contest was Socialism v. Anti-Socialism, Mr. Doidge should learn tha lesson of the election, that' the people will* have nothing to do with a political party unless it can promise and operate a social policy equal or superior to that now being implemented by Mr. Savage and his Christian-* minded Government. BARRISTER. The reported statements of the chairman of the National party, that Labour's success at the recent Manukau by-election was an example of what compulsory contributions from union resources could accomplish, provides yet another paltry solution of a supposedly young party's failure. Seriously, no right-thinking person could be persuaded to swallow such a generous helping of "applesuuce" without first instituting direct inquirr las to the wliolesomeness of this proffered [ dish, ilt was a favourite offering of the '"' I Forbes-Coates bracket, but is now positively out of date. Election records assure us of this. Should the new National party desire a wanner relationship with the voters of New Zealand, then it must steer a more straightforward course, and shelve for all time such - undesirable tactics as wore developed 'by it during the Manukau by-election.
