PARKING IN CITY.

NEW RESTRICTIONS. BY-LAW IN EFFECT TO-DAY. EDUCATION OF MOTORISTS. The City Council's new by-law governing parking restrictions came into operation to-day. Officers of the traffic department were busy - yesterday and to-day erecting signs indicating the amended regulations applying to various streets and portions of streets. The former system of movable stands and discs is being replaced by oblong notices affixed to verandah posts. . The effect of the new restrictions was seen this morning in Lower Queen Street where, between Fort Street and Customs Street, prohibition applies, save for five minutes' grace for attending to ■business and the loading or unloading of vehicles. This portion of Queen Street is usually lined with motor vehicles, but traffic officers were busy to-day tagging cars and reminding drivers of the new restrictions, and there were many "gaps" along the kerbs. One or two motorists confessed to ignorance of the fresh regulations.

Another noticeable effect was the larger number of vehicles left on the municipal parking area on the site of the old railway station. The aim of the traffic department at present is to educate motorists concerning the new restrictions, but stricter measures will be taken later, when there will be no excuse for drivers not being familiar with the by-law. Interested knots of onlookers watched officials explain the regulations to drivers to-day. . In a number of streets, particularly narrow ones close to Queen Street, park in<r is prohibited during business hours. This prohibition applies between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Fridays, and between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on other days. Signs indicate where parking is permissible for 10 or 20 minutes, according to thi* locality, and in portions of Queen Street, Symonds Street and Karangahape Eoad, where different restrictions apply,

throughout the day, special signs are] provided; Some read that parking is generally 10 minutes, but is prohibited between 4.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Mondays to Thursdays, between .4.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Fridays, and between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on Saturdays. After 6 p.m. parking in Queen Street and Karanga'hape Road is limited to 30 minutes, and thus theatre-goers cannot now leave their cars in these streets. In other streets the restrictions cease at 6 p.m. Queen Street should look changed late this afternoon as, after 4.30 o'clock, parking will be prohibited on both sides.
