WITH THE AMATEURS. —— i G. HUGHES' CHAMPIONS lIP BIDE. • ~. : . ■ i By winning fastest time in the 100miler last Saturday Graham Hughes covered himself | with glor.y, as with the fastest time went the. Auckland provincial nnd Xcirth Isliind championship sashes. Graham dominated the scratch bunch of eleven, all the way and was one of the few who forced the pace throughout, for at ■ one stage lie ' actually had a break oil the rest of,, the scratch 'bunch, but ctsuld not carry 011 himself. His ride was a brilliant effort and the finest in his racing career, which began in 1032. If lie can produce 'another ride like this on October 24 in the l'almerston to Wellington 102-miler he must win the New Zealand championship. C. Gooder, off scratch, disappointed. That wonderful little junior Haddon Hawke acquired merit by 'being third and the fastest junior. His handicap was 33.0 and he did his best to force the pace, but there were not enough supporters in his bunch, otherwise this bunch must have won. H. Hawke is one of the finest junior riders in Auckland, if not in New Zealand, over a distance. This last effort places him as No. 1 junior in Auckland this year. He won the Takapuna "fifty" on the King's Birthday and the first centre race of the season from 100 riders. Stan Alderson put up a very good performance and one that put him in the team to represent Auckland in the New Zealand 100-mile championship. Stan and Walter Willis rode together for 75 per cent of the journey and they were in the limelight all the time. At 80 miles Willis had to let Alderson go on his own. Stan will not let Auckland down in the j Palmerston to Wellington race, as he is a very strong rider. I Jack Baldwin and Arthur Silcock both punctured and Cliff Morris found the 100 miles a long way. On Saturday and Sunday next working bees will be busy on the track at New Lynn, starting at 9 a.m. All mem'bers are asked to attend, as only combined efforts will get the track ready for racing on , the first Saturday in November. Everybody must bring a spade.
