OUT OF RACE.
NEW ZEALAND PILOT. Flying-Officer Clouston Crashes; ONLY ONE ENTRANT FINISHES. United Press Association. —Copyright. JOHANNESBURG, October 4. TTie New Zealand competitor in the air race, Flying-Officer Clouston —the last one left in the contest —crashed 'at Gwelo, 130 miles south of Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia. The machine was wrecked, but the pilot and a passenger, Mr. Tasker, were not injured. Owing to engine trouble Mr. Clouston had been able to make only short hops, bue he covered 1400 miles yesterday, landing safely at Tabora, Abercorn and Mpika before he was forced down at Otoko. There the airman took in 12 gallons of petrol and started again for Salisbury. His non-arrival caused great anxiety and every available aeroplane started at midnight to search for him. An earlier message from Cairo reported that Mr. Victor Smith, a South African competitor, who left Athens for Cairo on Friday in the hope of finishing within the time limit, after another delay left for Khartoum, and on his arrival there he announced his retirement from the race. Thus, of the nine starters, only the winners, Messrs. C. W. A Scott and Giles Guthrie, finished the course. »
