NEW GUINEA NATIVES
CHRISTIAN MARRIAGES BAN. Heated religious antagonism has been aroused in New Guinea by the passing of a new ordinance by the Legislative Council at Rabaul, New Guinea. It makes marriage by Christian or civil rites illegal for the natives of New Guinea, although in the past these ceremonies have been encouraged by the authorities themselves. It was found, however, that after they had contracted legal Christian marriages the natives reverted to polygamy in accordance with their own customs. This, the administration, felt, was likely to bring the European system into contempt. The natives, therefore, have now been deprived of the benefits of registered marriage. Members of the various religious missions in Mandated New Guinea take a different view. They are up in arms against the ordinance,- which they describe as unjust and retrograde.
