PHILOMEL NAVY'S CHAMPS.

By winning the Cole Cup final in the early game at Blandford Park, the Philomel team has clearly established its position as the champion naval side this season. In a previous knockout competition, which included the Imperial sloops Leith and Wellington, the Philomel captured the Home Cup for all warships on the New Zealand station, and, after eliminating the Duuedin in the first round, the Philomel lads created another surprise by outing the formidable Achilles eleven by the only goal scored in Saturday s strenuous knock-out. The Cole Cup replaces the Reason Banner, which was formerly the symbol for the champion ship of the New Zealand Navy, and was held by tlie Diomede when she left for special service in the Mediterranean, to be afterwards relieved by the Achilles: The new cruiser arrived with a Soccer side of distinction in tiie senior service home contests, and it contains some very finished exponents of the code, but their studied tactics and planned play was again upset by the Philomel's policy of hustle and bustle. There was a large attendance of service enthusiasts, with the inevitable good-natured barracking, and, after a neat Hank attack by Luke .and Colley had been netted smartly by orowu, the Achilles battled in vain to break through the solid defence of Walters in goal, and Kiniber, Owens and Scott in the back division. Cotlerill. Lund and Cox were prominent in the Achilles attacks, ad Wakefield and Whitehouse staunch defenders. Walters in his first appearance as a Soccer player gave an impressive performance in keeping Philomel's goal intact, and the veteran Luke was warmly congratulated on his good work in building up and coaching the champion team from the trainng ship, and enabling the trainees to enjoy jam for tea on Saturday at the expense of the new cruiser. The Phillies are still in the Falcon Cup, and not without hopes of a third piece of plate for the wardroom sideboard.
