TAUMARUNUI CLUB

THE OPENING DAY. CUP VICTORY FOR MAZIR. RAY EGYPT'S BIG SURPRISE. The annual meeting of the Taumaruaui Racing Club was opened at Paeroa on Saturday, and will be concluded to-day. The weather conditions were ideal, and the going was in excellent order. There was a, large attendance. The Taumarunui Cup resulted in a victory for Mazir, who came with a fine run in the straight to beat Bonny Gay. Mungacre's recent consistency met with Teward when he scored in the Flying Handicap, but Gay Egypt's win in the Spring Handicap was a surprise, and he paid well over double figures. The jumping events were annexed by Curlew and Emancipation respectively. Betting was brisk throughout the day, and the totalijator handled £21,375, against £11,219 last year, an increase of £10,156, The Hack Cup. Queen Nona was the only withdrawal from the Hack Cup, and Sergia, Valpai and Pound Sterling had most friends. Survoy led past the stand from Illimani. Hiss Musketoon, Pound Sterling, Sergia ind Seaman, and along the back Survoy had Illimani, Seaman and Miss Musketoon as his nearest attendants, with Pound Sterling, Killadar, Full o' Scotch Sergia and Valpar next. Sergia moved up crossing the top, and as they entered the straight Survoy led from Seaman, Illimani, Miss Musketoon, Pound Sterling, Sergia and Respectful. Sergia did best in the run to the post to win by lalf a length from Whirlinint, with Seaman three-quarters of a length away.

The Chief Event, Lagoon, Silver Briar and Roxy failed io parade for the Taumarunui Cup, and Mazir was a warm favourite, with Con Fuoco and Bonny Gay also well supported. Te Hai led out-from Mungatoon, Tradesman, Mazir and Bonny Gay, but passing the stands Tradesman had tharge from Te Hai, Mungatoon, Bonny % Gay, Mazir and Delrain; then came Gay Rose and Con Fuoco. The order was Jhe same along the back, and the only alteration across the top was that Mungatoon replaced Te Hai. Bonny Gay then went through and was first into the straight from Mungatoon, Mazir, Tradesman and Con Fuoco. In a good finish Mazir finished solidly to score by lalf a length from Bonny Gay, who beat Con Fuoco by three lengths. Jockey Suspended. An inquiry was held following the Taumarunui Cup into interference to Tradesman and Te Hai. After hearing the evidence the judicial committee decided to suspend H. Wiggins, rider of Mazir, for one month. When London fell at the first fence 5n the Handicap Hurdles his rider, J. Muir, received a kick on the head and lad to be taken to hospital. i Close Finish in Steeples. Huskie and Semiarch did not contest Jhe Steeplechase, and the bulk of the Money was entrusted to Emancipation, The Hiker and Golden England, the firstjamed winning t>y a narrow margin.

The Hiker and Golden England were first out and led over the double from Banter, Friendly Boy, Green Park, Moree and Emancipation, Dark Princess having lost aer rider at the second fence. King's Spear balked at the second fence of the double and Moree came to grief at the sod wall. Passing the stands the next" time Friendly Boy and The Hiker were on'*terms*,:- followed by Golden Englaud (six lengths away), Green Park, Banter, Kiifcle and Emancipation. Green Park took up the running along the back the last time, well clear of Friendly Boy, The Hiker, Kinkle, Banter, Golden England and Emancipation. Friendly Boy and Banter fell half a mile from home And Green Park led into the straight from The Hiker, Kinkle, Golden England and Emancipation. In a good finish Emancipation came through on the rails to get the verdict by a short head from Kinkle, with Green Park half a length away. The Hiker, Golden England and valpeen were next. Mungacre Wins Flying. The Golden Sheila-Mungacre bracket and Tray Bit were in most request in the Flying Handicap and the public were Well on the mark. Mungacre was first to break the line, attended by Lady Ruler and Tray Bit, the order along the back being . Lady Ruler, Tray Bit, Mungacre, Wahine Reihi, Golden Sheila And Legatee. Lady Ruler still held command across the top, followed by Mungacre and Tray Bit, with Golden Sheila, Wahirie Reihi, Legatee and Grand Score next. There was no change in the running as they turned for home and Mungacre did best to win by threcguarters of a length from Tray* Bit, with Wahine Reihi half a length away. Legatee, Lady Ruler, Golden Sheila and Grand Score were next.

Surprise in Last Event. Seven horses went to the post in the Sprint Hack Handicap, the last race of the day, and Blue Needle and Lornacre were the popular fancies, but an .outsider in Gay Egypt won and paid a double-figure dividend. There was a false start, in which Lornacre, Sir Tommy, Merial and Bonnie Song galloped about a furlong before being pulled up. When the field were sent away afterwards Blue Needle, Lornacre and Merial began quickest, and crossing the top the first-named was followed by Gay Egypt, Little Ruse, Merial and Lornacre. Blue Needle and Gay Egypt held their advantage in the straight from Lornacre, Merial, Sir Tommy and Bonnie Song. Gay Egypt hung on better than Blue Needle over the final Stage, and beat her by half a length, with Bonnie Song, who finished fast from the rear, one length and a half away.
