FEARS OF STRIFE.
French Government's Ban on Demonstrations. PARTY ACTIVITIES INQUIRY. (Received 10 a.m.) PARIS, October 2. Fears of renewal of Internal strife are disclosed in an announcement that the Government has ordered an investigation into activities of the Social party, which Colonel de la Roque created following dissolution of his Croix de Feu ("Fiery Cross"). Colonel de la Roque's propaganda in North Africa is specially resented by Communists and Socialists. The Government has also banned a Social party demonstration and a Communist counter-demonstration arranged for ' to-night, and has forbidden ' ;M. Degrelle, leader.of the Belgian Rexists, to lecture.
ARCHBISHOP'S DEATH. HOBART ROMAN CATHOLIC. (Received 2 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The death has occurred in a private hospital here of the Most Reverend Dr. William Hayden, fourth Roman Catholic Archbishop of Hobart, aged 67. ARMAMENT RACING. WAR AND REVOLUTION ECHO. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 2. "Armament racing can only end in war," declared Sir Stafford Cripps, Labour M.P., in a speech at Leeds. "If we are plunged in war I devoutly hope that the -Torkers of this country will use it for the pyrjj£se of revolution."
