TRACK GALLOPS.

WORK AT ELLERSLIE. i SOME SMART EFFORTS. GAY DEFENCE, BOW YANG AND KELLY. Ideal weatlier conditions prevailed at Ellerslie tliis morning for training operations, and there were several smart efforts recorded, the best being those of Gay Defence, Bowyang and Kelly over sprint distances, .while Red Manfred worked attractively over a " round. The course proper, with the poles 45ft out, was in use, and the No. 3 grass, sand and tan; tracks were also open. The going was a shade on the dead side. Kilonsoa, who was first out, got to the end of six furlongs in 1.23 3-5, after running her first three furlongs in 40 2-ss. Waitaka and Star ran half a mile in 55 4-ss, with little between them at the finish. Valmint finished in front of Jewelled Girdle at the conclusion of seven furlongs, which took 1.35 3-5. The last six took 1.22 1-5, and Valmint was running on nicely. Salva was in front of Backblock after traversing four furlongs, in 54 l-ss. Salva is shaping well for a novice. There-was little between Roman Mascot and Teddy Boy after completing a mile in 1.51 1-5. They went fast over the initial half-mile, which occupied 53 1-us. Tin Lap and Haputaie reeled off three furlongs in 39 l-ss, being on terniß at the finish. Persian Lady, who followed, got to the end of half a mile in 55 l-ss. King Rod covered a round in 2.18 2-5, running his last six furlongs in 1.26 2-5. He did his work well. Tybalt was let off with an easy six furlongs, which he completed in 1.28 4-5. Bowyang (Goldfinch) reeled off half a mile in 51 3-ss. He had some speed on when he jumped away, and recorded 12 2-5s for his first furlong. It was a splendid effort, and he was running on in good style. Speedfast strode over six furlongs in 1.20 1-5.'

Gay Brone.v and a companion ran home from the half-mile post in 57 l-ss. Knight of Australia • (Coon), Royal Appellant (Buchanan) and Horowhenua (Kearns) were associated over a mile and a quarter, which occupied 2.22 1-5. They ran the final rtmnd in 2.11 4-5, seven furlongs in 1.37 2-5, and the final three furlongs m 42 2-ss. The first named pair were practically together, with Horowhenua close up. All went well, particularly Royal Appellant. In traversing five furlongs in 1.5 2-5 Kelly was responsible for the best gallop over the distance during the morning. He ran the initial, two in 25 l-ss, and was going strongly at the post. Zane Grey got to the end of a round in 2.19 1-5, the last seven- furlongs taking 1.45. Gay Defence, carrying a light weight, sprinted attractively ovor half a mile, registering 51 2-ss. It was his first test against time since being recommissioned, and he shaped exceptionally well. The stable mates, Tidewaiter and Little Man, slipped over half a mile in 53 l-ss, the former beating his companion by several lengths. Lord Vil went evenly over a mile, running the distance in 1.51. After Breakfast. Mandamus (Gilmore) and Aiwai (Cavaney) completed half a mile in -53d. They finished together, but Aiwai. who is a lazy worker, was being kicked up at the finish. Mandamus did his work in good style, and appears to have thrown off his recent soreness. The best rdund of the morning was credited to Red Manfred (Cavaney), who covered the distance in 2.8 2-5. The last- seven furlongs took 1.3G 1-5, and .the final three furlongs 42 3-ss. He went very fast over the first half of the gallop, and consequently was tiring a shade over the final furlong. However, it was a first-rate performance. Crooning (Buchanan) and Valise (Gall) got to the end of five furlongs in 1.10, but were not unduly bustled. The veteran horsemei» eaw still hold their own in the saddle. Mainland, after taking 26 l-5s for her first two furlongs, was timed to complete five in I.7—a smart effort. Carshalton strode over six furlongs in 1.26, and Rilling King and All Irish traversed a round ■in 2.26 2-5. Karl (Gilmore), who went away slowly from the six furlong post, ran his last five in 1.8 4-5. and the final ha'fmile in 54 2-ss. He was not doing his best at any part of the task. No. 3 Gra^. Ringshot finished up useful work by sprinting!his last five furlongs in 1.11 4-5, and Marjory Daw covered the last throe furlongs 6f a similar task in 42 3-ss. Mountain Breeze dashed over , three furlongs in 39 2-ss, while United and Vera Acre got to the end of half a mile in 53 l-ss. Bon Star took 54s over the same journey. The two-year-old. Francis Drake, w-as worked easily over half a mile, occupying 565.

On the two-year-old track Red Ledger reeled off three furlongs in 40s. He '-/as inclined to loaf a bit towards the finish.

* ■'-■■'-. I ■ TAKANINI TRIALS. FLOOD TIDE IMPRESSES. . .. INVER ALSO PLEASES. The middle grass track was in use for fast work, at* Xakanini this morning, th-j 'poles being out Bft. The going was good. Inver was two lengths in front, of Anion at the end of five furlongs, which took 1.6 3-5. High Born and Disturbed stroda over half a mile in 595, while Bachelor King took 41 3-5s to complete three furlongs. ■ Lap Up was allotted a round, which occupied 1.52. Flood Tide had Mai de Mer to assist him over the last four of seven furlongs, and completed his task in 1.32 3-5.. He ran the last five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. This was a good trial in view of his engagement in the Mitchelson Cap. Valamito, who was to have gone- with Nun Nicer, broke away too quickly and .ran three furlongs in 41 3-os. Nun Nicer was not timed. Surella completed six furlongs in 1.19 4-5,; the last five occupying 1.6: He worked freer than usual. , ;.j . / ■ tapis Lazuli was doing better than Ebb and Flow while traversing half a mile in 535. Gay Talkie, with a good weight, up, took 52 2-5s for a similar task. Precise was stopping at' the end of four furlongs, which took 565, and Merry Lap was a length, in front of Spearcourt over six furlongs, run' in 1.21. Dutiful and Yerrapie recorded 1.7 l-5s for five furlongs, and-El Mendel ran home from the three furlong post in 40s. Lord Willonyx and Elanage were timed to run half a mile in 545. Over the same journey Trade Wind recorded similar time. Warwick Lad and the Drolatique filly sprinted five furlongs in 1.7 2-5. Kaiwaka and Latharna dashed over six furlongs in 1.22. Queen Nona is making satisfactory progress, and it, is not likely that she will have to be destroyed as the result of her recent accident.

FAILED TO SHOW UP. Captain Furst, the only three-year-old in the New Zealand Cup entries, failed' to show up in his first race at Napier Park last Saturday. TE UIRA AT STUD. Among the niares at Mr. H. E. Morriss' Banstead Manor Stud, England, is Phar Lap's sister, Te Uira. who was specially purchased for the stud last year. Te Uira is said to be in foal to Colorado Kid, who ia by Colorado from Spearmint's daughter, Baby Polly, and was. a very successful racehorse a few years ago. As Mr. Morriss owns the stallions Manna and: Tai-Yang, Te Uira should not Jack for opportunities as a brood mare.' "'. , .■;.,' . ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. No definite programme has been decided . on for Davolo, but if a capable rider can J be secured it is probable he will be got ready for the New Zealand Cup, in which ' he has been handicapped at 7.7. In the past he has run hie best races up to a mile. HONOUR'S LASS RETIRED. . Honour's Lass, a sister to Grey Honour, has been retired to the stud and will be . mated with Friday Night, a brother to , Phar Lap. The dam of Honour's Lass and Grey Honour, Greylass, will also be mated . with the same sire. At present Greylass has a colt foal by Nightly at foot. ON THE IMPROVE. Nothing of a strenuous nature has been required of Gar Yaals, and the bay gelding will not race until the Dargaville meeting, which opens on October 17. He has improved in condition during the last month and is now more' solid-looking than he has been for some, time. On each occasion that . Gar Vaals has been sent against the watcli he has shown promising speed, and his winning turn may come before the country meetings are over. MAY ACCOMPLISH THE FEAT. Although Irish Comet has never won a cross-country event at Ellerslie, lie. should go close to achieving the feat if he goes to the post in the Hunters' Steeplechase next j Saturday. He is a dashing jumper, with ' a fair amount of speed, and the two mike and a half journey is unlikely to trouble hjm. Irish Comet's best effort to date was his second to Forest Glow in the Winter Steeplechase at the Great Northern meeting, and that form will warrant hijn getting strong support in his coming engagement. . DOING SATISFACTORY WORK. So far this season Marjory Daw' has not been seen out in public, but she is due to compete at Ellerslie next Saturday in a six-furlong hack event. This filly has furnished a good deal since last season, and although she has not been- required to break any records on the track her work has been most satisfactory. Marjory Daw possesses abundance of speed, and P. Scally should win his share of stake money with the daughter of Chief Ruler this season. PLACED ONCE LAST SEASON. During the short time that Wee Pat has been in commission, following a few months* spell, she has been getting through her work in a satisfactory manner. She is still a shade on the big side and will not be ready to race just yet a while. In six starts last season this mare was only once in the money and she has not won a race since she scored in the Great Northern Hurdle Race in 1934. Wee Pat will most likely have a few races on the flat before she takes on hurdle racing again. FIRST TEST OVER DISTANCE. Few horses at Ellerslie are doing better I than Royal Appellant, who promises tp strip a fit horse for the Mitchelson Cup. His track work has also been executed in pleasing style, and it will not be for lack of condition if this five-year-old fails ro put up a creditable showing next Saturday. However, Royal Appellant will be having his first test over a mile and a half, and it remains to be seen whether he has the neceeeary staying ability to succeed over that distance at his first attempt. EFFORT WAS ENCOURAGING. The maiden three-year-old. Haputale is making good headway under F. Gilchrist'e guidance, and his effort over three furlongs on the course proper on Thursday morning was encouraging, He was started-on four occasions last eeason, and the experience will be an advantage to him when he begins racing again. Haputale has been growing fast since last autumn, and consequently he has not been seriously tested, and the policy may be a wise one for his connections. HIS FIRST WIN. Wanauga, winner of the Trial Stakes at Napier Park last Saturday, is by the Austra'ian-bred horse Oration, by Ciceroi from -Elsie Hart, who scored a surprise win in the Avondale All-aged Stakes m 1925. Bred by Dr. C. Blundell, of Te Awamutu. Wananga is raced by Mr. W. Hogan, and is a four-year-old gelding from Flower Gold, by St. Amans from Shower Gold, by Marble Arch from the imported mare Merry Nif, by Merry Hampton. Merry Nif "was the dam of General Latour, and Shower Gold produced King Lu, so that there have been some good gallopers in the family. Wanganga was having his first race, and is evidently speedy, which is not surprising, in view of his breeding.
