WORKERS' HOUSES.
j PLANS IN HAND. ACTIVITY IN AUCKLAND. CERTAIN SITES INSPECTED. » Active steps are being taken in Auckland to forward the Government's project of a housing scheme for workers. A good deal of preliminary work lias been done, and the plan has now been advanced to the stage where blocks of land in the suburban areas are being inspected. Department officials would not give details as to the sites of the blocks, because it is stated that it might lead to speculation. A number of areas have, however, been looked at, but whether finality has been reached in regard to [ them is not known; nor was information available as to the area of the blocks, j The headquarters of the scheme are lin Wellington, and all the details [ emanate from there. Auckland officials expect to receive circulars containing full details in the near future. Mr. A. Tyndall, director of the State housing activities, was in Auckland last week, when he conferred with officials in the Lands Department. Another indication that the Government's plan is being pushed is the fact that the building of the factory to be used in connection with the scheme has been started. It is situated near the Penrose railway station. Tenders were accepted about the middle of last month, and the actual work on the factory began on September 24. At present the foundations are being excavated.
