"NEW LEADER DEFEATED."
REFERENCE IN PARLIAMENT.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON', Wednesday. The result of the Manukau by-election was received with satisfaction by Government members in the House of Representatives to-night, but there was only one reference to it during the sitting. When Mr. H. S." S. Kyle (-National, Riccarton) was speaking late in the sitting, Mr. T. H. McCombs (Government, ■Lyttelton) interjected; "Have you been told tvho your'new leader .is yet?" Mr. hesitated a moinent before replying, said: "You would not expect me to tell you, because the new leader has beeit I ..defeated to-day." This reference to Mr. Drtidge provoked hear-ty laughter, which was capped by Mr.- *F. -(/Glovenimyit,.; Auckland East)"'telling Mr. *Kyle thafrj he was rather unkind. . . I
