CHEESEMAN PRIZES.
ANNUAL AWARDS ANNOUNCED. DRAWING AND POETRY. The Auckland Institute and Museum has announced the awards made in the Cheese man Memorial competitions for various kinds of work in connection with botany. The competitions are conducted annually, and are open to the pupils of Auckland secondary schools. This' year three prizes have been given in two sections, drawing and painting pi some aspect of New Zealand natural history forming the first section, and a poem 011 some aspect of New Zealand nature the' second. The second section was judged by Mr. J. W. Shaw, lecturer in English at the Auckland Training College. Awards made are as follow:— Drawing and painting: M. H. McKenzie (Auckland Grammar School) 1, G| H. Keeling (Auckland Grammar) 2, Peggy Bomford (Takapuna Grammar) 3. Special mention was made of the work of M. Cassie (Auckland Grammar). Poetry.—Barbara Johns (Auckland Girls' Grammar) 1, Margot Griffin (Epsom Grammar) 2, Pamela Kelliher (Sacred Heart Convent) 3. Special mention was made of the work of Joan Boswortli (Sacred Heart Convent), Marie Buckley (Sacred Heart Convent), Audrey Frain (Epsom Grammar), and A. Mackie (Takapuna Grammar).
