BEATING THE BOUNDS.
Modern Aspect to Ancient Ceremony. URBAN COUNCIL'S ACTION. (Received 0.30 a.m.) LONDON, September 27. One of the most ancient municipal ceremonies in England assumed a modern aspect wlien the Hoddesdon Urban District Council following the time-honoured custom of "beating the bounds," and did it by air as well as afoot. \ The council's surveyor flew round the' boundaries, dropping flags at the boundary posts. Those on foot carried out the traditional ceremony of bumping some of tlieir number against milestones after seizing them by shoulders and feet. The air journey took 20 minutes, but the pedestrians took 6£ hours to cover the 13 miles.
