TRAFFIC INCREASE
RAILWAYS PROSPERING. Figures for the September period show that the Xew Zealand Railways are experiencing a considerably improved patronage in passenger and goods and stock traffic. Mr. G. H. Maekley, general manager of the railways, said this morning that for the period as compared with the same period last year, traffic returns for the Auckland district both in long-distance and suburban lines showed a substantial increase. Live stock traffic was also on the upward grade, and the timber business was very brisk. General goods also showed an advance. "The experience in the Auckland district is typical of what is being experienced throughout Xew Zealand," he added. "We notice a marked increase in special week-end business, with resultant increased revenue to the Department. We anticipate a very busy season."
