MANUKAU YACHT CLUB. ANNUAL SMOKER. OLD MEMBERS HONOURED. The life members and honorary officers of the Manukau Yacht and Motor Boat Club were entertained at a smoke concert held in the clubhouse, Onehunga, on Saturday evening. The president, Mr. W. Marks, presided, being supported by Mr. J. Park, Major ot Onehunga (a former president and foundation member of the club); Mr. It. Belclier, commodore ; Mr. E. Lairil, vice-commodore , Mr. J. Mcintosh, rear-commodore; Messrs. A. McLeod, T. Pardingtbn and other life members of the club. Mr. Marks, when /welcoming the la.rge number present, said it always had been the policy of the Manukau Club to their older members, also the donors ot prizes and other workers, and the attendance showed that their services were not forgotten. He was especially pleased to see so many life members present, and a few of the foundation members who joined when the club was formed, in 1891, 45 years ago. The toasts included "Vice-presidents and Donors," proposed by the commodore, Mr. Belclier, and acknowledged by Mr. T. Pardington; "Local Bodies," proposed by Mr. C. Herbert and acknowledged by the Mayor, Mr. Park, and Mr. T. Pardington, junior. Mr. Park sahl all of the local bodies had very friendly feelings towards the yacht club. The harbour board and borough council had acceded to all reasonable requests for improvements to their mooring area and the upkeep and lighting of the road. With the return of better times and shorter working hours, yachting should benefit and he looked forward to seeing more craft on the harbour. It was very pleasing to know that the two local clubs were working harmoniously, and he felt sure it would benefit both. The toast of life members was proposed by Mr. E. Laird and responded to by Messrs. A. McLeoci, T. I-ardington. senior; W. Vaughan, C. Herbert and C. A. Osborne. Mr. Laird said this honour was not easily earned., and he felt sure it was keenly appreciated. Mr. J. W. Rawlinson, honorary secretary, proposed "Kindred Clubs," which was acknowledged by Mr. W. A. Wilkinson, who said the Waiteinata clubs all honoured the Manukau Club for its assistance with the Anniversary Day regatta, and its participation in the Cornwell Cup and other contests, and they had the Auckland clubs' best wishes for the coming season. It was coincident, he added, that the Mayors of Auckland and Onehunga were both keen yachtsmen, and supported the various clubs in a practical manner. The toast to old-timers was proposed by Mr. W. Marks, coupled with the names of Messrs. T. Quigley and P. A. Bruford. Mr. Quigley mentioned several incidents of racing and trading in the earlier days on the Manukau, Waitemata and Hokianga Harbours. Mr. Bruford said he had been away from Onehunga for about 30 years, and was pleased to find the old club doing so well. He hoped to get a boat this season and re-visit some of their favourite anchorages. Mr. A. Knight (All Black footballer) proposed "The Manukau Yacht Club," which was acknowledged 8 by Mr. Marks. Mr. C. A. Osborne proposed a vote of thanks to the artists who had contributed very largely to the pleasure of those present. They included several popular songs by the club's mouth organ band, and items by Messrs. J. Hall, B. Watson and others. The chairman . presented Messrs. R. Belcher, E. Laird and J. Mcintosh their flags of office.
